Yahoo: the yell that broke the Hindi film hero
Before 1961 the hero stood still and sang. Then a man threw himself down a snowy hill and the rules changed.
The fifties Hindi hero was a restrained figure. He suffered well, he stood reasonably still, and he sang about it. Junglee in 1961 ended that.
The yell
The famous "Yahoo" that opens the song is not Shammi Kapoor. It is generally credited to Rafi on the recording, with the scream itself sometimes attributed to the playback singer Prabodh Chandra Dey or others in accounts that disagree with each other. What is not in dispute is the effect: a hero rolling in snow in a red sweater, entirely undignified, and audiences loving him for it.
What Rafi did with it
Mohammed Rafi is the reason this worked. He could sing a ghazal with total gravity and then do this, and both sound like the same man meaning it. Shankar-Jaikishan wrote to that flexibility for a decade.
Follow the thread forward and you get to Kashmir Ki Kali three years later, O. P. Nayyar's trotting rhythm, and a version of screen masculinity that had not existed in Indian cinema before and never fully went away.
